Future Fish

Future FishRecently I helped form a charity that assists children, the disabled and the disadvantaged in our society to participate in and enjoy the wonderful word of fishing, as well as being committed to replenishing fish stocks and repairing the damaged environments.

I arranged for an informal meeting with about 90 people I respected for their integrity and the fact they shared my passion for leaving something for the next generation. Among the audience was angler and former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, as well as other prominent business identities.

The result of the meeting was the formation of the Rex Hunt Futurefish Foundation. Former football great and prominent businessman Stan Alves is Chairman of the board of directors and deputy is Michael Buxton, who heads up the massive MAB Corporation. Together with other fishing and business people, we have a great team. I approached the former Victorian Premier, Jeff Kennett, about the project and he guaranteed that he would match dollar for dollar money raised by the foundation up to $250,000. The present Victorian Premier Steve Bracks has continued with that support.

Since its inception we've dared to believe we'd make a difference-and we have. We raise money to buy stock from fish farms and recently released our one-millionth fish into Victorian waters. These fish include brown and rainbow trout, golden perch and Murray cod. We have received a permit to add Australian Bass to the list.

The Foundation has given thousands of children the opportunity to try fishing on our “Kids Come and Try Fishing Days”. As well, our disabled anglers have been given more access to fishing waters around the state. We have a Health Waterways project has seen hundreds of willows removed from the banks of streams. And recently, in partnership with Barwon Water near Geelong , we opened our fishing and education center. This will allow children from all over the state to come and enjoy fishing in a natural environment. The saying goes that from one acorn does a mighty oak tree grow. I thank my friends for helping the foundation make a difference.
