March: Wayne Palmer

G'day all, Jarrod and I headed up to Mulwala for the weekend for a dabble. We hit the water Saturday around noon with a light to moderate easterly wind and poor water clarity about 30cm, but it did't deter us. Fish for 4 hours with different lures and we both picked up one fish each only small 40-45cm, one on a mumbler and another on a SB. had a small break and headed out again to try surface lures. The wind became stronger and conditions were less than ideal but we did manage 4 surface strikes but no hook ups. Sunday the excitment was building because we were heading out with Roger from Cod Hunter tours. We were greeted with light easterly again and Roger took us towards the top end of the lake where the water was clearer just under a meter. It was a cracker of a day and the wind dropped to nothing as the lake glassed off and made fishing far easier than usual. The information Roger provided was unbelievable and well worth the dollars. We boated 8 cod between 40-60cm, 1 at 70cm and the largest for the day and a PB of 87cm. Monday we snuck out for 3.5hrs before we had to head back home. With confidence sky high from what we had learnt the day before, off we went in search of water we hadn't fished before. The morning started a little slow with 2 bumps and no hook up then we came to a fishy looking snag. Jarrod had the first cast and unlike Jarrod it was slighty off line and caught the timber. Rather than rush in and des-nag it there was some structure further back which I fired a cast into. The lure would have dropped for about 3ft and then a couple of winds of the reel, BANG I'm on. The next 10-15 minutes saw Jarrod negoiating the snagged rod (still hooked up) with the electric motor and keeping the boat and fish in clear water while I tried keeping the adrenalin under control. Then it surfaced, Jarrod skillfully sliped the big girl into the just adequate size net. Relief all round and lots of photos taken before its release. A team effort boated my first ever 1+meter cod. It measured 110cm and estimated weight of 60lb. An awsome weekend and one that will take some beating. Regards, Wayne
