Cranbourne Tackle world Report

08 February 2008

Unfortunately, you really notice the effects when a little cold weather blows in, the fishing reports seem to fade.
Apart from the lack of reports this week the weather forecast is looking fantastic for the weekend. The Rhyll shark comp is on again and with good weather approaching I’m sure plenty of anglers will get their chance of nailing a shark.

For those who are fishing the comp, here is a little help (if you need it) to guide you on your way in finding a hungry shark. These two GPS Marks from Paul’s Worsteling’s Fishing Guide Western Port have been producing sharks over the past few weeks, it could just be the heads up you need.

WESTERN PORT:
NEWHAVEN:
Staff Members Adam and Mitch (The Twins), fished around Newhaven on Tuesday. The boys managed 28 whiting to 37cm on pipi’s. Most fish were caught during the run out tide.

FLINDERS:
Robin Gray from Peninsula Fishing Charters reports snapper to 45cm being taken in 40 metres of water out from Flinders.
They have also been catching whiting around the bottom end of Western Port on pipi’s and mussels.

BUOY 5:
Steve Johnston from Ace Fishing Charters has also found plenty of success on the pinkies. He has been fishing around Buoy 5 and 6 during the last of the Ebb tide with pilchards and squid working well.

BUOY 17:
Customer Chris fished with his mates Darren and Paul on Friday night near Buoy 17. The boys managed a 9ft seven gill shark and 20 kilo gummy shark which took salted tuna strips. They also managed 26 snapper to 44cm on pillies and squid. Later on in the night they busted off on a monster fish that took a whole eel chunk.

TOP END:
Shane and mates fished the Outer Bank in the top section of Western Port on Friday. Fishing the ebb tide they landed 28 whiting ranging 35 to 45cm on pipi and mussels.

GENTLE ANNIE:
Regular customer Geezer and a friend fished on Wednesday evening in the gentle Annie channel. They bagged out on good sized whiting using pipi and mussels for bait.

PORT PHILLIP BAY:
THE RIP:
We have received numerous reports about the large schools of salmon continuing to frequent the rip. Anglers are having best success trolling small bibbed minnows on the edges of the schools while simultaneously casting lazer lures into the bubbling water. Fish have ranged in size but plenty of salmon to 3 kilos have been taken.

FRANKSTON TO MT MARTHA:
Paul has received a few reports that there is plenty of calamari between these areas. Drifting in 3 to 4 metres of water seems to be the go, over heavy weed growth. Anglers using small size 2.5 squid jigs have had most success. Last week I had success with the plumb Hayabusa jig in much the same areas.

OUT OF TOWN:
PORT ALBERT:
Customer Barry Hicks reports good numbers of kingfish to 1 metre in length being taken from the jetty at Port Albert during the week.

WARNAMBOOL:
The fishing in the Hopkins River has been quite productive over the last week. Soft plastics have worked a treat but anglers fishing with peeled prawns have also found success around Jubilee Park.

BERMAGUI:
Steve Tedesco from Head Hunter Fishing Charters reports that the game fishing is excellent at the moment around Bermagui.
This week on one trip they tagged 4 from 5 marlin.
Steve has also heard of blue marlin to 500 pounds, yellowfin tuna ranging 10 to 15 kilo, dolphinfish and a 20 kilo spearfish.
Some of Steve’s mates also raised 6 marlin in one day.

Good Luck and Fish Hard,

Jarrod Day
