New Products!
Adam Royter is Fishing Fever’s new gadget geek and will be writing our new products column ever week. Adam is no slouch with a hand full of new stuff having come from the product research & development of Pure Fishing. His 20+ years in the fishing tackle industry gives him a good eye for shiny new things and carrying along with him a motto that states “he who dies with the most fishing tackle wins” should attract the attention of any keen angler.
DARTMAX Squid Jigs
The Fish League (Ecogear) DARTMAX is one of the most technically advanced squid jigs in the world today. Designed by champion tournament squid angler Takayoshi Oromoto these jig are total cephalopod slayers!
With its unique ‘DARTING’ action, brought about by the toe point being lifted to the top of the lure and the head section of the jig being smooth and slim like, it can slide through the water with a subsurface ‘walk the dog’ action totally unique to this jig!
The weighting system on the DARTMAX is also calculated to be the most snag resistant, while the head design has been shaped to reduce drag. With just the right amount of weight and shape in the head to enable an exacting action, the hollow sections in the rear are able to elevate the hooks to avoid snagging the bottom. This amazing squid jig is able to do all of this while it still obtaining perfect posture and balanced in the water.
The hooks on the DARTMAX are of the thinnest and sharpest carbon steel available and are erected in such a pattern as to never miss a single squid leg or tentacle. The body covering is made from cross weave, nylon mesh and is resistant to the harsh beak of a squid. While the under foil (considered to be the most important aspect of the colouration of any squid jig) can be a multitude of colours to match and adapt to the various conditions found in local squid waters.
With several small sharp lift of the rod tip (ask staff for a demo) anyone can get the most out of these incredible jigs. Watch as they dart from side to side enticingly across the reefs hunting the squid. If you’re a keen squider then you just have to have a DARTMAX or two in your box!!
A range of new and exciting colours have just landed in store and are selling fast! Be the first to fish (after us that is) these amazing new colours and see your squid captures increase beyond belief!! You’ve never fished a squid jig like the DARTMAX!

Mordialloc to Black Rock
The pier has come alive in the rough conditions this week with a heap of pinkie snapper being taken on Monday afternoon, while most were around the 30cm mark there was a few fish up around the 2kg mark along with some salmon to a kilo.
Tuesday wasn’t as rough but the fishing was good with one angler taking a fish of over 3kg, along with this there was some nice salmon all around the kilo size and a few small trevally.
Out in the boats on Sunday afternoon local Mordialloc angling club member Renee headed out with his mate and got a 3kg snapper in 14m.
There has also been some nice snapper in on the onshore reefs along Ricketts Point to Black Rock with plenty of pinkies and the odd snapper around the 3-4kg mark, and one top fish that dragged the scales to 8.1kg.
Thursday morning the boys had several good reports of snapper being taken out from Mordialloc and towards Black Rock, most fish ranged between 2-5kg and were taken mostly on pilchards, although there was some nice fish also taken on 5” gulp jerk shad soft plastics.
Big Garfish
This week has seen some excellent gars being caught along the shallows around Black Rock with fish to 45cm in length – best baits have been silverfish.
Squid
Squid continue to be as thick as ever on the shallow reefs, especially out from Olivers hill to Mornington with some decent sized ones being found in slightly deeper water
Queenscliff was a little slower last weekend but customer John Davis fished down there last weekend with some other members from the Brighton Angling Club where the boys managed a dozed great squid all between 1-2kg, they were taken on a range of baits and lures.
Carrum
Customer and Vic Game club Member Paul Gaedicke took his son Zach out on Friday for a snapper session, the boys fished in 18m out from Patterson river in perfect conditions where Zach managed his first snapper for the season, the fish took a pilchard bait and put up a great fight.
Anglers fishing out from Carrum this past week have been reporting big numbers of snapper marking up in the 14m line up towards Ricketts Point.
St Leonards
Matt Hunt fished over between the white lady marker and the pier on Sunday to catch a bag of 20 good quality whiting and 8 squid to a kilo in weight. To book a charter call 0409 008 441 or go to www.fishingservices.com.au .
Westernport
Well I fished the port on Thursday with good mates Matt Cini and Andrew Goodfellow and while we caught nothing except for a few barracouta other anglers who chased the whiting had some top bags of fish taken form the middle spit with many of them around the 40cm mark.
Out of Town - Lake Tyers
The Bryant family headed away to lake Tyres for part of the recent school holidays, with young Gemma, Hayden and Rhys out to settle a score with the local flathead population.
They had some great fishing up in the back of the Black fellows and Nowa Nowa arms where the water was up around 18 degrees, the kids fished with soft plastics and managed an average of 10-15 flatties averaging 30-40cm each session, although Gemma did get one great fish of 55cm, while Rhys got the biggest which went 58cm.
Bullen Merri
Good Mate Fred Bizvouard fished Bullen Merri on the weekend with his local angling club Southern Boat fishing club, they had great success catching 20 trout to 3.7kg, the trout were taken on a range of methods with bait fishing from the bank producing the best results.
Bermagui
I had a call from Scotty at Bridge Motors in Bermagui during the week where he informed me of anglers starting to catch albacore along the shelf, the long liners are also having some of the best tuna fishing they have ever seen up the coast so fingers crossed we will see a big run of yellowfin along the south coast in the coming weeks.
Catch you soon
