Weekly News & Fishing Report

25th September 2008

Some horrendous conditions have slowed the fishing this week but some of the braver “crazier” anglers have had some reasonable to good fishing for a variety of Species.

Snapper Reports

With the often gale force conditions this week it has made it a bit harder for anglers to get out but there have been a few snapper on offer with several fish caught out of Carrum on Wednesday morning. The promising thing this week has been lots more people are reporting seeing bigger numbers of snapper on the sounder – even if they’re not biting yet its good to know they are about.Wayne Freibe called in to also report seeing several snapper to 3kg taken of Mornington Pier this week by the dedicated land based fishermen.

Beaumaris Squid

Young Tyler has been fishing Beaumaris pier over the past week while on school holidays and has had some excellent catches of squid of an evening on white jigs.Other anglers are also reporting good numbers of squid from the pier with several saying they have bagged out on several occasions this week, brown coloured jigs have also been very popular.

Mordialloc

Fishing from the pier and around the mouth of the river has been excellent this week with plenty of salmon to a kilo on offer for both lure and bait fishermen, best lures have been 3” stickbait style plastics in natural colors, while white bait has been a top baitBest results have been early morning and late afternoon – especially if it is a bit rough. The creek has also been producing some mullet and mixed in with the salmon are a few trevally to 30cm.Patterson River The mouth of the river has been producing plenty of salmon for lure fishermen and as with Mordialloc the rough conditions are the best.Young Guru Dougie Bauer is on school holidays at present and giving the local salmon population a hiding in the main stretch of the river.

Brighton Breakwall

Sales rep for Wilson Anthony Pavlou headed to Brighton Breakwall on Tuesday morining to try and catch a snapper on a lure in the windy conditions and while he didn’t get a fish himself he did help one other angler land a 3kg red.Over the following weeks fishing the shallow reefs from here to St Kilda will be well worth it as the big snapper will move to these areas to feed.

Squid

Still plenty of squid on offer from Mornington to Frankston over the past week with some much better ones amongst them being taken on brown or purple jigs with the standouts being the brown Hayabusa and the Purple Haramitsu Westernport Regular customer Andrew Goodfellow fished the port on Wednesday and had a cracker of a session. He stared at Lysaughts and got several reds from 1-3kg along with a bunch of big couta, all the action was on the run out tide and best bait was by far the red rockets, once the tide turned the action stopped so he went to the shallow banks for squid and had a great session using both baits and jigs he managed his bag of squid ranging 1-2kg .

Tortoise Head

Still good reports from this part of Westernport with most people managing a healthy bag of whiting ranging 35-42cm.It’s worth noting this is also a good area to hunt squid as they move over the bank to feedOut Of Town Customers Mark Dalziel and Mark Consantine from Oakdale fishing club fished the Goulburn River at Thornton on the weekend and had great success catching 4 rainbow trout to 2.6kg using Tiemco Mighty Peppers, they also reported other anglers having good success on gulp 3” minnows in pearl watermelon colours.Purrumbete Rex and Matt Hunt fished Purrumbete on Wednesday and almost had the ultimate day, while trolling scrub worms and Gulp Turtle Back worms behind ford fenders they caught several brown trout and redfin and managed to hook a big brown that they fought to the boat and estimated to be in excess of 10lb – unfortunately the light leader broke just as it was near the net.The boys also saw another angler with a pair of trout taken on live bullhead which they said were well over 5lb.
