Fising Fever Repport

Weekly News & Fishing Report
6th August 2009

Mixed weather over the last week has allowed people to get out and enjoy some great fishing. From big salmon in the bay to nice mulloway in the Yarra, Melbourne still fishes well if you know where to look!

Port Phillip Bay
Squid are still on the menu for a lot of our customers. They’re being caught wherever you can find some reef. No special spots or secrets to where or when-just go!! With a slightly slow influx of the larger adult squid into the bay the local gun squiders are poised with jigs at the ready for what should be a cracker ‘big’ squid season to come.

We have talked about this a lot this year but we must reiterate on the fact that if you’re not scenting your jigs you are not going to get the best out of your days fishing! So many customers are coming in and telling us stories of great catches after adding Glowmax, Egimax or Gulp Shrimp sprays to their jigs.

Good customer Alan reported catching 7 squid off a local pier while 5 other squiders watched on with zero action! He puts his success down to good quality Japanese jigs and the Egimax spray. Get on it!!

On Saturday evening some of our young customers came in with their dad, after having no success at Mordialloc Pier and battling with the strong northerly winds we sent them to Beaumaris Pier to hopefully find a squid in less windy conditions. On Sunday they popped back in to let us know they caught 10 squid form the pier with the AG coloured Harimitsu doing extremely well.

Salmon. Did someone say salmon? When will it end?? That’s anyone’s guess. The Mordi Creek is still bubbling up to its eyeteeth with micro salmon. This is a great time to go down and practice your soft plastic retrieves. You can successfully catch and release 10 to 20 small salmon in no time flat. This is good training for the would-be bream spinner!

Please adhere to the size limit if you feel the need to kill these fish. If you see anyone keeping undersized fish push them in....I mean call the proper authorities!!

Don’t forget the creeks local population of mullet, trevally and southeastern spotted gobies! Tegan Dinsdale caught some lovely big mullet on Monday morning using chicken fillet dipped in tuna oil, mmmm yum!

Speaking of salmon, the larger models have tuned up in Beaumaris Bay. Trolling small hard bodies or metal slices will catch you a few or you can cruise up quietly and cast a soft plastic or surface popper into where the fish are and catch them all! These hard fighting, horrible tasting fish are great sport on really light gear. Clean fighters, the salmon will have you tied up for hours of fishing fun. Try bream or trout spinning rods and nice light line for best results.

If you must troll try to keep your distance from the school because repeated passes or driving over the school will put them down for good and ruin everyone elses fun for the day. And you don’t want that!!

Customer John Soloman called in to let us know he had a great session on the big salmon in Beaumaris bay with fish to almost 2kg.

Good customers Darrin "Gilligan" Jansen and Lou "The Hammer" Fuller fished out off Safety Beach in Darrins' tinny The SS Minnow. The boys had a great session on Sunday catching a whole bunch of salmon around the kilo mark on River 2 Sea Sea Rock Minnows.

Yarra
Last Saturday Adam & Berkley Pro Staff Brad Hodge fished the Yarra River in town. Starting at the Bolte Bridge looking to catch a pinky or two the boys where met with the snorts and bubbles of Sammy the Seal. Not you’re best of fishing companions! After a few tentative bites and one solid hook up and loss, the seal decided they should go somewhere else!

Fishing above the Flinders St Bridge was the boy’s next port of call and the place they stayed for the rest of the morning. Catching 13 bream in quick succession in front of the camera, Hodgey really put the Berkley Big Eye blade to good use. With a mixed bag at the end of the session, the lads caught bream, salmon, tailor and trevally. Big Eye Blades in any colour where the go with a single, short hop off the bottom.

Westernport
Customer Igor fished Stockyard point on Sunday and was more than happy when fishing in the windy conditions produced a great gummy shark of 4kgs.

Flinders has recently been invaded by a pack of hungry short finned pike (the bigger one of the two pikes). Customers report good trolling sessions with hard body lures, squid skirts and metal slices. Trolling deep is the key so try a para-vain, lead down-under sinker or deep diver to get into the action.

Out Of Town

Sea Spray
Keysborough Angling Club Legend Graham Simester fished Sea Spray last weekend for a few small salmon along with two great fish of around 1.5kg. Although the fishing wasn’t red hot Graham said it was perfect conditions on the beach with the northerly wind being cut out by the sand dunes.
